Digital Products

digital products

Creating digital products is one of the best ways to start creating a passive income. It’s something you can make once and then sell indefinitely.

It’s a pretty simple process, usually helped by tools like Canva, which I absolutely adore. Depending on the product/s you choose, you’ll have different options of selling. Different platforms like Etsy, Amazon (for e-books), Sellfy, Shopify, etc. (the list certainly goes on), have everything you need to start your business.

These platforms are the tools you’ll need to sell, but let’s talk a bit about what you can create, that’s the first step anyway.

Given the nature of these products, the sky is the limit when it comes to selecting what you want to produce. Some require specific knowledge, others none whatsoever, and furthermore, very little time invested. It’s not impossible to create an android application if you’ve never opened a computer, but not truly impossible. Just choose your battles wisely.

Go through the list of possible digital products below and see what catches your eye. Check the detailed articles for more info on each of them.

There are numerous types of e-books that you can create. Keep in mind that your goal, as for any product, is to provide the buyers with something useful. So you can entertain, you can instruct, you can provide your knowledge in this form so that others can benefit from it.

The fact that they are usually cheap can be an advantage. With the correct marketing strategy, you can earn a lot.

As for selling platforms, most use Amazon KDP, since it’s extremely easy to use. But you can use your own website, even Etsy.

If you’re wondering what to write about, the sky is the limit. But here are some ideas to start from:

  • How-to books: how to build a website with…, how to start a successfull youtube channel, etc. Anything you know how to do can be transformed into a book.
  • Cooking books: if you’re all about food, this is certainly for you. Make sure to include quality content and great pictures. Don’t copy other people’s recepes!
  • Children’s books: these are great since they have a low number of pages, but don’t be fooled by that, they’re not easy, and the market is oversaturated. Despite that, it’s one of the most rewarding writing experiences.
  • Romantic books: people write these like crazy. And they seem to work for a lot of them. Who knows, maybe this is your hidden calling. Read some to get the idea, and maybe try to write one, you never know.

Speaking of KDP, almost any e-book can be sold as a physical one. So most of the examples above still apply, but make sure to format them correctly.

These have been a big hit for quite some time.

There are all sorts of planners, from daily, weekly, to monthly. There are cleaning planners, study planners, fitness planners, you name it. Anything you can plan, you can use to extract a template, therefore, a planner that you can sell. Easy, right?

There are limitless ways to earn from software. Maybe you are interested in creating games, maybe useful apps – mobile or otherwise, the thing is that not even the sky is the limit here. Anything you can think of that brings people value has a potential for success. Check out the Business Ideas page for some ideas.

Digital art comes in many shapes. The same is true for the ways in which to monetize such art: there are lots of possibilities. You can sell them as printables, you can sell them as they are, so that others can use them further to create other pieces. Platforms like Etsy, Sellfy, FastSpring, CreativeFabrica, TheHungryJpeg, and many more, offer great opportunities to market your work.

If you’re good at something, then you can probably teach others to get better at it too. Courses are a great way to generate income that is perfectly passive. You create it and you sell it time and time again. Simple. This category is actually pretty lucrative if you can place these courses under a monthly payment setup. This is easily doable.

With photography, there are multiple ways of monetization. You can sell prints, you can sell them as stock photography, all of which allow a passive income once a photo is taken and uploaded.

As for platforms for selling: Shutterstock, Fotolia, Stock, Pond5, Dreamstime, Alamy, and many more.

On the audio side of digital products, there are, of course, multiple roads you can take:

  • Audiobooks
  • Meditation exercises
  • Podcasts
  • Trainings
  • Music
  • Sound effects

Among the platforms that support selling this type of digital assets are:

  • MySoundwise
  • Awesound
  • Pond5
  • Dreamstime
  • 123RF
  • TuneCore
  • AvocadoAudio
  • TunePort
  • Fantero

They might not seem like a natural choice, but journals do sell. Being part of the low-content books, the cover does most of the selling, so it’s a must to design (or hire a designer to do it) a great one. What I found most surprising is that there are tons of types of journals:

  • Gratitude
  • Dream
  • Travel
  • Personal junk
  • 5 Year
  • Food
  • Pregnancy
  • Reading
  • Poem
  • Plant
  • Project
  • Finance
  • Fitness
  • Productiviy
  • Ideas
  • Wedding

The list goes on as much as you’d like. Anything you can write down can become a journal, therefore might need a specific structure to make the journaling easier. And here you can step in and design it.

There is a cute idea going around saying that any bookmark that costs more than one dollar is a waste of money since a dollar bill can be used as a bookmark.

But apart from that, people want nice bookmarks. And providing them as printable assets is great for both the buyer and yourself. The instant gratification of downloading and printing what you need, in your home, without taking one step out of the house. I don’t know about you, but it sounds wonderful to me.

To up the game, make them black and white and sell them as coloring bookmarks. Perfect for kids and for stressed adults. Pardon me, more artsy adults.

The world needs templates. You can be one of those great people that provides them!

You can create and sell templates for virtually anything: websites, posts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). All you need to do is decide on what you’d like to sell, and do it. Canva is a great tool for starters.

Good luck!
